Only active citizens can effectively defend the interests of their country, Deputy Chairman of the Council of the Republic, National Coordinator for Sustainable Development Goals Anatoly Isachenko said during the ceremony of awarding SDG Youth Ambassadors. The event was held on the sidelines of the 3rd edition of the International Symposium “Education for Sustainable Development for All Generations – Social Agreement” at Maxim Tank Belarusian State Pedagogical University, BelTA has learned.

“As the National Coordinator for Sustainable Development Goals, I am pleased to host this ceremony that is taking place for the second time and is already becoming a good tradition. For each of us being an advanced person can mean different things. However, I am sure that a young person of a new generation must be able to respond to modern challenges, to think out-of-the-box, to be responsible for their decisions, and to be raised in the spirit of patriotism. Only an active citizen can effectively defend the interests of the homeland and thereby make a feasible contribution to the sustainable development of the society. Among them are the young people who will become youth ambassadors today. This status is not only a reward, but also a very big responsibility,” Anatoly Isachenko said.

According to him, today Belarus belongs to the states with a high level of development. “Belarus is 18th in the global Sustainable Development Goals Index. We are proud of this result and expect that your efforts, enthusiasm, energy, and aspirations will contribute to progress. You and us have a very serious mission. I would like to immediately ask the ambassadors to think about the goals for which you are responsible, so that at our next meeting we could see your vision of what needs to be included in the relevant regulatory documents and the development program of our country, so that we could achieve even greater results. Believe me, every voice, every proposal will be heard and taken on board. After all, our youth is great, creative, and everyone has their own ideas. I am looking forward to hearing a presentation of each of you,” he said.

The 3rd edition of the International Symposium “Education for Sustainable Development for All Generations – Social Agreement” is held on 2-3 December. The plenary session “Education for sustainable development: vectors of change” and the ceremony of awarding the SDG Youth Ambassadors took place on 2 December.

The event is organized by the Education Ministry, Maxim Tank Belarusian State Pedagogical University, the Education for Sustainable Development Association, the Office of the UN Resident Coordinator in Belarus.
