Lukashenko heads to Turkmenistan for CIS summit

Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko is off to Turkmenistan on a working visit to attend a meeting of the CIS Heads of State Council, BelTA has learned.

The leaders of the countries will discuss interaction within the Commonwealth of Independent States, which marks its 35th anniversary this year. In his speech at the summit, Aleksandr Lukashenko will set out Belarus’ position on current topics of CIS activity and further prospects of this international association. 
The agenda of the meeting includes more than 15 items. They concern, among other things, social development and quality of life, the transport connectivity of the CIS, joint work in the media space, cooperation in law enforcement, and the preservation of historical memory.

The meeting of the CIS Heads of State Council will be held in the Avaza national tourist zone on 9 October. On the eve of the summit, the leaders of the countries and other high-ranking guests will attend a number of cultural events. These include a gala concert by artists representing various countries of the CIS. Belarus will be represented by the famous Khoroshki dance company and the Pesnyary band.

An exhibition of the CIS member states will be co-located with the summit. On the main day of the interstate forum, the national stands will feature videos, presentations, and visual and printed information about products manufactured in the CIS countries, the achievements of individual sectors of the economy, and monuments of spiritual and tangible culture.
A meeting of the CIS Foreign Ministers Council was held in Turkmenistan ahead of the summit.

The foreign ministers approved a number of draft documents that will be submitted for consideration to the CIS Heads of State Council and the CIS Heads of Government Council. Among them are a draft statement by the heads of state on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the founding of the CIS, draft decisions on cooperation in the field of tourism, on declaring 2029 the CIS Year of Transport Connectivity, on measures to shape a positive image of the CIS and its member states in the media space, and on introducing amendments to the agreement on cooperation in combating crimes in the field of information technology.
