Belarus’ draft National Security Concept contains a provision on protecting the institution of the traditional family, defining it as a union between a biological male and female, Secretary of the Belarusian Security Council Alexander Volfovich said.

"We have strengthened the concept with a provision defending the institution of the traditional family as a union between a woman and a man by birth. It excludes various gender constructs, gender reassignment surgeries so much advertised in the West and so on," the SB. Belarus Segodnya news outlet quoted him as saying.

Other amendments to the concept
Apart from that, according to Volfovich, amendments were made to the concept’s provisions on the risks associated with the use of nuclear weapons. "Today, as many as 150 American nuclear warheads are deployed in Europe, let alone France and the United Kingdom’s nuclear arms. However, some countries are asking to deploy such weapons on their territories. What for? The reason is obvious, bearing in mind their jingoist nature and aggressive rhetoric with respect to our country," he explained.

The updated draft of the National Security Concept was approved by the country’s Security Council in early March 2023. As Volfovich said earlier, about 70% of the concept has been updated. According to Volfovich, the need for updating the concept stems from the "changes in the global military-political situation," which have taken place since November 2010, when the current edition was adopted.

Thus, it now mentions a new sphere - biological security. The concept also specified the notion of the source of a threat to national security. It provides definitions of the risks and challenges to national security, which is essential in terms of swift response measures. Apart from that, the list of strategic national interests now includes the protection of the Belarusian people as a unique historical community.
