The archival sector in Belarus plans to digitize at least 45 % of particularly valuable documents by 2029.

This was announced at a press conference dedicated to Archivist’s Day by Oleg Voinov, Director of the Department for Archives and Records Management of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Belarus, as reported by a Soyuz.by correspondent.

In 2026, employees of the country’s archival sector continued to shape a new image of archival institutions, the speaker said. Thus, it is planned to commission a new modern archival complex in the fourth quarter of this year. “Construction is currently being completed, and the city of Minsk will have its own full‑fledged, modern archival complex,” Oleg Voinov shared. Previously, document storage for the city of Minsk was provided by the State Archive of the Minsk Region.

Archives have continued to increase the pace of document digitization. Thus, by the end of 2026, the milestone of 3 million electronic pages will be reached.

“A few years ago, the figure of 1 million was an unattainable goal for us. However, technologies, new equipment, and organizational and staffing measures allow us to achieve this figure,” the speaker noted.

“Overall, by 2029, we would like to digitize at least 45 % of the particularly valuable documents stored in the Republic of Belarus,” he emphasized.

Oleg Voinov emphasized that this process involves more than just digitization. The documents are being cataloged and introduced into scholarly circulation, while users are also given the opportunity to access particularly valuable and highly sought-after records remotely. Each year, over 600,000 sheets of archival documents undergo restoration.
