Belarus plans to switch to electric urban passenger transport

Belarus plans to switch to electric passenger transport in its cities, Chairman of the State Committee for Science and Technology Aleksandr Shumilin said during the opening of the 25th Belarusian energy and ecology forum Energy Expo 2021 on 12 October, BelTA has learned.

“Energy and environmental issues have always been drivers of innovation. Belarus has recently adopted a state program on electric transport development. We set an ambitious goal to switch 45% of urban passenger transport to electricity by 2025. It cannot be done without new materials, technologies, energy storage devices, which are being developed today,” Aleksandr Shumilin said.

In his words, much attention is paid to waste recycling as well. “We need to develop our economy, industry, but with a minimum load on the environment. Waste recycling is an important direction in science and technology,” the chairman of the State Committee for Science and Technology said.

The ongoing international exhibition “Energy. Ecology. Energy Saving. Electro” (Energy Expo) has featured about 130 scientific, technical and innovative projects in energy and rational energy conservation, geology, environmental protection, and environmental safety. The State Committee on Science and Technology has showcased at the collective stand exhibits of the institutions and organizations of the National Academy of Sciences, Education Ministry, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection.

The international exhibition Energy Expo is underway at the Football Center in Minsk together with the international specialized exhibitions Oil and Gas Technologies, Atomexpo-Belarus, ExpoSvet, Water and Air Technologies, ExpoCity.
