Rosatom confirms preparations for the construction of the third power unit of the Belarusian NPP

Rosatom State Corporation has officially announced preparations for the next stage of cooperation with Belarus — the construction of a third power unit at the site of the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant (BelNPP). The corresponding statement was made by Alexey Likhachev, CEO of the corporation, in his New Year's address.

"We are strengthening our leadership in the international arena. Last year, Rosatom became the only global player to launch export projects for the construction of nuclear power plants in several countries at once. We have arrived at new sites in Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, and we are preparing for the construction of the third unit at the Belarusian NPP," Likhachev said.
This statement was a public confirmation of the decision taken at the highest level. The final agreement on the implementation of the second stage of the station's construction was reached on November 14, 2025 following a meeting with President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko.
Currently, relevant departments, in particular the Ministry of Energy of Belarus, are already carrying out practical work. A package of necessary international agreements with the Russian Federation is being prepared and key parameters of the future project are being worked out.
It is noted that two possible ways of developing nuclear generation were considered.: construction of a completely new station or expansion of an existing one. The choice was made in favor of the third power unit at the site of the Belarusian NPP in Ostrovets. This option is recognized as the most logical and economically feasible, since it allows you to use the already created infrastructure and trained personnel, which will reduce the time and cost of the project.
