Antarctic expeditions hold as much significance for Belarusian science as space exploration, Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (NASB) Vladimir Gusakov said during a meeting with members of the 17th Belarusian Antarctic expedition, BelTA has learned.

"We place approximately the same importance to Antarctic expeditions as to space flights. They are on par in terms of complexity and extreme conditions. The expeditions involve prolonged stays in harsh conditions: low temperatures, strong winds, and so on. Polar research is a promising area for our science, its results are recognized globally. Before the departure of the 17th expedition, we had a meeting with the head of state to discuss critical issues regarding the work of the Belarusian Antarctic station and its development. Most importantly, Antarctic expeditions contribute significantly to our country's scientific research," Vladimir Gusakov said.

Belarusian polar explorers tackle a wide range of tasks. "These are truly significant research projects aimed at protecting the environment and studying local resources, among other things. Based on this research, new developments in biology, medicine, and agriculture are being prepared. This is just one aspect of their work. It is important to enhance the significance and status of the Belarusian Antarctic station so that we will establish a permanent presence on the icy continent," Vladimir Gusakov emphasized. He noted that great attention is paid to improving the research and living conditions for Belarusian polar explorers in Antarctica and to providing them with equipment and tools.

On 13 April, the NASB brought together participants of the 17th Belarusian Antarctic expedition and those from previous years, personnel of the organizations involved in Antarctic research, representatives from divisions of biology, physics, mathematics, informatics, chemistry, and Earth sciences and young scientists. A special photo exhibition was also organized.

The 17th Belarusian Antarctic Expedition was given a ceremonial start at the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus on 28 October 2024. The expedition featured 14 people and was led by Aleksei Gaidashov, seasoned polar explorer, participant of all the previous 16 expeditions. The expedition included researchers from the NASB (the National Center for Polar Research, the Scientific and Practical Center of the NASB on Biological resources, the Institute for Environmental Management, the Institute of Physics), Belarusian State University, the national center for hydrometeorology, radioactive pollution control, and environmental monitoring Belgidromet, and other organizations of the country.
