Grodno is hosting an international conference ‘The Genocide of the Soviet People: Historical and Legal Assessment’, attended by representatives of the Prosecutor General's Office of Belarus and prosecutors from various regions of Russia. The Prosecutor General emphasised that Belarus and Russia should join efforts to combat the rehabilitation of Nazism and distortion of historical facts. He said that the Russian Federation had opened all its archives for Belarusian prosecutors who were investigating the criminal case on the genocide of the Belarusian people during the Great Patriotic War.

Shved noted that a huge number of new documents and testimonies are received online every day. Active work is underway with colleagues from the Russian Prosecutor General's Office, the Investigative Committee and other state bodies of the Russian Federation. He also emphasised the importance of sharing experience between Belarus and Russia in the fight against falsification of history and rehabilitation of Nazism.

The Prosecutor General added that Russia and Belarus should join forces in addressing these pressing modern problems. He noted that a large volume of documents in German, which had not been translated before, is coming from Russia. Speaking about co-operation with other countries in terms of helping to investigate the genocide case and providing previously unknown documents, Schwed mentioned that in 2024, ‘German authorities have become more active.’

‘These are documents related to trials conducted in Germany in the post-war period,’ he specified.

As for the criminal investigation into the genocide case, Schwed noted that it will last for a few more years, possibly then suspended, but not terminated. The Prosecutor General also said that this year and next year it is planned to transfer to the courts at least 6-5 criminal cases on the deeds of the deceased punishers.
