Political scientist Yuri Voskresensky gave his take on the appointment of Sergei Glazyev to the post of State Secretary of the Belarus-Russia Union State as he spoke to the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA's YouTube channel.

Sergei Glazyev was approved for the post of State Secretary of the Union State this week. His candidacy was agreed upon by the presidents of Belarus and Russia. Aleksandr Lukashenko singled out one of Sergei Glazyev's strengths - he has an innate ability to deal with economic matters.

Analyzing the appointment, Yuri Voskresensky said: “Indeed, the new state secretary is a big name in the political establishment of Russia, a very well-known person. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, he was involved in all major events that took place in Russia and beyond. Of course, he is a seasoned economist.”

The political scientist noted that he personally knows Sergei Glazyev. “We met at one of events, I gave him my book, we had a conversation. Back then I was surprised by his profound knowledge of Belarus, primarily its economic agenda, the historical path of our country. In other words, obviously he is not an outsider, not a theorist regarding the Belarusian agenda,” he said.

According to Yuri Voskresensky, this appointment can give a new impetus to the development of the Union State. “It seems that we have already reached a very high level of integration. Yet, I would like a third Slavic nation to join the Union State – this is my dream - even if not now, but within 10-20-30 years. And then, from my point of view, this union will be complete,” he said.

The political scientist wished the new state secretary good luck. “I am sure that he will be a productive politician,” he added.
