Belarusian customs officers have stopped the largest shipment of drugs and psychotropic substances from the European Union to the territory of the EAEU in the history of sovereign Belarus, about 1.3 tons, the State Customs Committee reported.

"The criminals intended to move 8 thousand briquettes with 915 kg of hashish and 50 boxes with 367 kg of mephedrone in a truck of a Polish carrier to Belarus and Russia under the guise of a shipment of mineral water declared in the documents. However, several dozen bottles of water were used as a cover product," the SCC said.

The scheme was established by the staff of the operational customs, who decided to thoroughly inspect the truck after scanning its contents using an inspection complex. Taking into account the fact that after the clearance the cargo was supposed to proceed to the Russian Federation, the customs authorities of Belarus, together with their colleagues from Russia, conducted subsequent operational search and other activities.

As a result, members of an international criminal group - citizens of the European Union, Belarus, Russia and Moldova - were identified and detained. During the search, another 5 kg of hashish and mephedrone were seized from them.

According to this fact, the Operational Customs of Belarus and the Federal Customs Service of Russia have initiated criminal cases for drug smuggling on an especially large scale, the sanctions of which provide for imprisonment of up to 20 years.

The value of the seized batch of drugs and psychotropic substances on the black market is about $62 million. And this amount would be enough for 2.933 million single doses.
