According to the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, Russian and Belarusian scientists are planning a joint study into COVID-19, its mutation, as well as people’s liability to coronavirus infection, informs the correspondent of the Union State portal.

Academicians of Russia and Belarus are planning to develop two large-scale genetics projects. According to the Deputy Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, Co-Chair of the Academic Council for Virology of the International Association of Academies of Sciences Alexander Kilchevsky, the first joint project is aimed at studying coronavirus, as well as at examining its mutation in Belarus, whereas the second one is designed to research the liability of Belarusians and Russians to this virus.

“This virus has certain peculiarities: the Chinese and Italians, for example, suffer from the disease in different ways. We want to examine this specificity together with our Russian colleagues,” said Alexander Kilchevsky.

Today the two countries’ figures from academia are meeting online for the first time in order to discuss the problems and consequences associated with the spread of the new coronavirus. According to Alexander Kilchevsky, such meetings are useful for both Belarus and Russia:

“Today four speakers from each country are going to address the conference. We are meeting in order to discuss, on the one hand, the fundamental principles of coronavirus, and, on the other hand, treatment options and its epidemiological aspects. It is important for us to assess the state of scientific research into coronavirus in Russia and Belarus, to draw our own conclusions. It is crucial to meet from time to time so as to outline the lines of research, to approach the problem from different sides, to formulate a plan for mitigating the after-effects of coronavirus, to study the experience of Russian colleagues and adjust our research and innovations.

Moreover, a new Academic Council for Virology has been created at the International Association of Academies of Sciences. The work of the Council is aimed to bring together scientists and specialists so as to overcome the bad after-effects, prevent new cases of the disease and human loss, told the NAS of Belarus. Among the members of the Council are leading Belarusian and Russian scientists, as well as academicians from China, Armenia, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, Tajikistan and Montenegro.
