According to The Wathers, Japan has been hit by record snowfalls. In some areas, trains had to be stopped due to the height of the snow cover. So the snow piled up to the roofs of houses.

Snow records were broken in Maibara City, where 62 cm of snow fell in a 24-hour period, and in Sapporo with 60 cm. At the same time, the total snowfall in Sapporo reached 133 cm. Weather forecasters said this had not happened since February 1939, when 169 cm of snow fell in parts of Japan.
All trains to and from JR Sapporo Station have been suspended today due to the snowfall.

A total of 3.54m 2.71m of snow was recorded in Tsunan City and a village near Nagano, respectively. Both of these figures are the most for municipalities in the past several years.

People living in snowy locations have been warned of possible power outages, avalanches and other snow-related hazards.
