Lukashenko: Belarusians oppose wars

15:55, 8 April

The Belarusian people are against any war or confrontation, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he met with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Pakistan to Belarus Sajjad Haider Khan on 8 April, BelTA has learned.

“We are for a peaceful settlement of the conflict [between Russia and Ukraine]. Wars are unacceptable to us, it is at our genetic level. We went through some very difficult times in the middle of the last century, which cost us a third of the population. Wars, conflicts, confrontation are unacceptable to the Belarusian people,” said Aleksandr Lukashenko.

“This is also the basis of our current position, which is that the issues that are discussed at some international forums cannot be discussed and decisions cannot be made without taking into account Belarus' interests. We will stick to this position,” said the president.

At the Security Council meeting on 7 April Aleksandr Lukashenko said that the position of Belarus should be voiced at the talks on a peaceful settlement in Ukraine. “We don't proceed from the fact that we've been put into the same basket together with Russia. No. We proceed from the belief that this war is just over the fence of our country. And it is most seriously affecting the situation in Belarus. This is why there can be no separate agreements behind Belarus' back,” the Belarusian leader said.
