The Belarusian People's Congress is a powerful institution of democracy, Mikhail Myasnikovich who worked as Belarus' prime minister in 2010-2014 shared his recollections as part of the documentary “One for All” released by the Belarusian TV channel ONT on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the institution of the presidency in Belarus, BelTA has learned.

“The Belarusian People's Congress has taken its place in the system of government. This is a truly powerful institution of democracy. Only established states can afford such institutions,” Mikhail Myasnikovich emphasized.

Judge of the Constitutional Court Svetlana Lyubetskaya emphasized that the Belarusian People's Congress is another legal mechanism of people's power. “The ability of the Belarusian People's Congress to cancel any decision of any government body, with the exception of judicial ones, has a real impact on how the state functions. This is a kind of shield against unbalanced, or hasty, or erroneous decisions,” she said.

“If suddenly something threatens the national security of the Republic of Belarus, the Belarusian People's Congress will gather and have its say,” former Chairman of the House of Representatives Vladimir Andreichenko noted.

The Belarusian People's Congress gathered in its new capacity for the first time in April 2024. “Our homeland has no one but us. Only we know what kind of future Belarus should have, what our country should look like. And in this difficult, challenging time we must hold out. We must do it. Time has chosen us,” the president of Belarus said then.

“This is a brilliant step on the part of our president. I think this is a very useful step going forward,” emphasized Sergei Ling, Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers in 1991-1994 and Prime Minister of Belarus in 1996-2000.
