In 2024, Vitebsk Oblast is set to host the 11th edition of the Forum of Regions of Belarus and Russia, which will highlight scientific and technological progress and sovereignty, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Russia to Belarus Boris Gryzlov told the media during his meeting with the Vitebsk Oblast authorities, BelTA has learned.

“This year's Forum of Regions in Ufa set a high bar, and we would like to raise it even higher. Our proposal was two host cities for the forum - Vitebsk and Polotsk. The country's most ancient city, which is one of the centers of Slavic and Orthodox culture, stands on the territory of our region. That is why we suggested holding the first set of events in Polotsk. The airport of Vitebsk is capable of receiving a large number of delegations, which will then be taken to Polotsk on a branded train,” Vitebsk Oblast Governor Aleksandr Subbotin told the Russian ambassador.

The upcoming Forum of Regions will highlight sci-tech, technological progress and sovereignty. “The motto of the forum is Science - the Future of the Union State. These are the issues of innovation, technological interaction between the regions and between our countries in general. Not long ago, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said that it was time for representatives of third countries to take part in such forums. These could be regions of the countries that are members of the Eurasian Economic Community or other CIS countries. The forum could be held according to some new formula,” Boris Gryzlov said.

According to Aleksandr Subbotin, MPs decide on the agenda of the forum, the number of sections and invitees, and they will also join the discussions regarding the participation of third regions in the upcoming large-scale event.

Such forums are of great importance for Vitebsk Oblast. According to Aleksandr Subbotin, interregional cooperation with Russia is growing stronger and expanding. In addition to ties with the nearest Russian regions, Vitebsk Oblast is going to cooperate with the Far East. Boris Gryzlov noted that Vitebsk Oblast was the first Belarusian region to sign agreements with the new territories of the Russian Federation, in particular, with the Republic of Crimea.

The Russian ambassador to Belarus visited the Vitebsk enterprises Energokomplekt, Vityaz, and the plant of metal structures. There is also a cultural component in the program of the ambassador's visit to Vitebsk Oblast - he is set to visit the Museum-Estate of Ilya Repin in Zdravnevo.
