Belarus, Rosatom discuss Belarusian NPP project, cooperation prospects

At a working meeting with Director General of the Russian state nuclear industry corporation Rosatom Alexey Likhachev we discussed the construction of the Belarusian NPP and prospects for cooperation, Belarusian Energy Minister Viktor Karankevich told reporters on the sidelines of the Atomexpo international forum in Sochi, BelTA has learned.

"The forum is a great opportunity to communicate with colleagues, to make new contacts, discuss the current situation, talk about plans for the future. On the sidelines of the forum, Director General of Rosatom Alexey Likhachev and I discussed the construction of the Belarusian nuclear power plant and the prospects for further cooperation," Viktor Karankevich said. Plans are in place to sign an intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in the field of spent nuclear fuel management.

The minister also participated in the discussion of the development of nuclear energy at the plenary session of the forum with the participation of representatives of different countries with nuclear programs. "I spoke about the advantages of the construction of the Belarusian nuclear power plant. The most important thing is to increase the energy security and energy independence of our country. Training of personnel both for the Belarusian NPP and for management of radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel was also touched upon," he said.

"Technologies do not stand still, especially nuclear. Atomexpo showcases the latest achievements in the field of application of nuclear technologies, the use of peaceful atom in electricity production. It is also interesting to learn about innovations in the application of nuclear technologies in other industries: agriculture, medicine. It is very useful to explore the proposals from the scientific community. Scientific and technical support of the industry is very important. It generates new ideas ," Viktor Karankevich said.
