The historical and cultural value of "Grated potato dishes - traditions of cooking and consumption in Belarus" is proposed for inclusion in the representative list of the intangible cultural heritage of mankind.
The tradition of making dishes from grated potatoes, first of all, draniki, potato pancakes and babka, has long become a gastronomic brand of the country. They are represented in all six regions. Since 2022, this tradition has been included in the State List of Historical and Cultural Values of Belarus. To date, more than 370 carriers from 73 districts and 235 folk recipes of dishes from grated potatoes have been recorded.
The proposal of the Republic of Belarus will be sent by the Ministry of Culture to UNESCO by the end of March 2026.
The government noted that this will help to expand information about Belarus as a country that preserves its national cultural traditions, as well as increase the country's tourist attractiveness and promote gastronomic tourism.
Currently, there are seven Belarusian elements in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage lists.
