Belarus' Sabalenka becomes WTA World No.1

Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus has become the new WTA World No.1 in singles for the first time in her sporting career, BelTA has learned.

Despite her loss in the US Open final, Aryna Sabalenka overpassed Iga Swiatek of Poland who failed to defend her US Open champion title. 2023 US Open winner Coco Gauff of the United States rose to the third spot in the rankings. Aryna Sabalenka has become the second woman from Belarus to reach No.1, following Victoria Azarenka in 2012, who now ranks 23rd. Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus goes 102nd.

Novak Djokovic of Serbia topped the ATP rankings after beating Daniil Medvedev of Russia in the US Open final. This has become the 24th Grand Slam champion title for the 36-year-old Serbian player. Ilya Ivashka, Belarus' best-performing player in the men's singles, goes 153rd in the ATP rankings.
