Also on this day, a requiem concert was held at the State Palace of Children and Youth.
As part of the event, an address by the Russian Ambassador to Belarus Boris Gryzlov was read, in which the head of the Russian diplomatic mission recalled that the tragedy that occurred on September 8, 1941, took more than a million lives of civilians and defenders, but Leningrad did not surrender to the enemy.
"People gave their last strength to bring the blockade to a breakthrough and the complete defeat of the Nazis. Weapons of Victory were continuously forged at factories. Teenagers stood at the machines so that the front would continue to hold out," the Ambassador said in his address.
He noted that the defense of the besieged city is a legendary example of fortitude and courage that will forever remain in the memory of generations. Each day of the blockade went down in history as an example of the greatness of the human spirit, devotion and love for one's home and Motherland.
"We honor the memory of the Red Army soldiers and residents of the Neva Fortress. We carefully preserve the historical truth about the Great Patriotic War. In this context, we would like to emphasize the outstanding contribution of the members of the Public Association "Belarusian Union of Leningrad Blockade Survivors" to preserving the memory of the feat of the Soviet people," the appeal says. "Please accept our most sincere words of gratitude for your tireless, long-term work. Your work is of great importance to all of us. You not only preserve the memory of the tragic and heroic pages of Leningrad's history, but through your personal history you set an example for the youth, acting as a living bridge between generations."
"Today we bow our heads together before those who, at the cost of their lives, blocked the enemy's path to Leningrad soil. We honor all those who fell in battle for the besieged city. And we wish the veterans present here good health, spiritual strength, and all the best," concluded Boris Gryzlov.
