Makei: Presidential election used to attempt to destabilize situation in Belarus

The presidential election that took place in Belarus on 9 August has been exploited to attempt to destabilize the situation in the country, Belarus Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei told journalists after the meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in Moscow on 2 September, BelTA has learned.

“Unfortunately, the election in a post-Soviet country have been once again used by the external and internal forces to attempt to destabilize the social, political, and economic situation in the country,” Vladimir Makei said. “Of course, we were ready for something, but some things have come as an unpleasant surprise. I would like to say that in my career I have seen five elections, and we have never been faced with such an elaborate organization of protests from abroad. There still remain some unsolved problems, but it is already obvious that we have foiled an attempt to arrange a color revolution using the latest methods,” he noted.

The Belarusian authorities thwarted attempts to halt the industries and tear the country apart, Vladimir Makei stressed. “I would like to thank Russia for its balanced, reasonable, and consistent stance, for its support for the sovereignty and independence of Belarus, and for criticism of external pressure on our country,” Vladimir Makei added.
