Omicron is not harmless at all and many patients infected with this strain are carrying it severely. This was stated by Elena Bogdan, Chairman of the Health Committee of Minsk City Executive Committee.

She notes that coronavirus has a difficult course for many senior patients, especially those who have chronic diseases. Therefore, the virus can't be considered harmless.

Doctors predicted that the pandemic would end after the first and second waves. However, now Belarus experiences the fifth wave caused by Omicron. Omicron is very volatile, so it affects a lot of people, including a large number of children.

Bogdan noticed that each wave brings something new as the virus is constantly mutating. Therefore, collective immunity is essential to fight the pandemic. According to the specialist, 80% of the vaccinated population, including children, are needed for collective immunity. At the same time, revaccination is necessary after 5-6 months.

Elena Bogdan also pointed out that the number of vaccinated people in hospitals is much lower, and there are single cases of omicron in intensive care units.
