About 800 veterans live in Belarus, the average age being 99 years old

As of 1 May, there are about 800 veterans of the Great Patriotic War in Belarus, including 427 participants and disabled veterans of the war, as well as 6.3 thousand people who suffered from the consequences of the war, of whom 5.6 thousand are former prisoners of fascism. This was stated by Nikolai Orel, deputy head of the main department of the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, reports Soyuz.by.

The average age of participants and disabled veterans of the War is 99 years. Among them 55 per cent are men and 45 per cent are women. The largest number of veterans lives in Minsk and Minsk region. The “youngest” participants, guerrillas and clandestine fighters are 90-91 years old on average.
The oldest participant of the war turned 105 in January. He has two war orders and the Order of Labour Merit, as well as 45 years of labour experience spent rebuilding the country.
Nikolai Orel reminded that on the eve of Victory Day veterans are given financial aid. This year, payments began on 2 May and will last until 8 May. The amount of aid provided is 5 thousand Br for participants and disabled veterans of the War, while 2.5 thousand Br for other categories of veterans and 1.5 thousand Br for those who suffered from the consequences of the war.
The payments amount increases annually. About 13 million Br, which will be paid to more than 7 thousand people, has been invested. As of 5 May, 97% of veterans and disabled people received financial aid, while the rest will receive payments in the coming days.
