More than 11 million rubles has been spent to renovate Victory Square in the hero city of Minsk, said Natalia Smolskaya, Head of the Arts Department of the Office for Cultural Affairs of the Minsk City Executive Committee, reports the Union State portal.

“For these purposes we have used the funds of Minsk’s budget as well as the funds raised during the work-for-the-nation day held in 2019. More than Br7 million was allocated from the city’s budget, whereas Br4.3 million was transferred from the work-for-the-nation day fund,” said the representative of the Minsk City Executive Committee.

We would remind you that shortly before the 75th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War, Victory Square was closed for renovation. As a result, a full range of renovation works with a partial replacement of utility connections was carried out. The memorial hall in honor of the Heroes of the Soviet Union who died liberating Belarus, which is located underground, was modernized as well: now there is additional illumination and more column heads.

“There is a new screen for showing videos, as well as new information stands that briefly tell the history of the Great Patriotic War and construction of the Victory Monument itself,” said Natalya Smolskaya.

For information: Victory Monument is a historical and cultural treasure of Belarus. It was erected in 1954. The obelisk, which is faced with gray granite, is about 40 m high. The four faces of the pedestal are decorated with bronze high reliefs that were created by Belarusian sculptors. The obelisk is crowned with an image of the Order of Victory. On July 3, 1961, the Eternal Flame was lit at the base of the obelisk. Underneath the ground, the monument is surrounded with a ring gallery merging into a round memorial hall. In the center there is an illuminated wreath made of artistic glass – a symbol of the Eternal Flame of Memory. Last time the square and the monument were renovated in 2003.
