Belarusians permanently residing in Russia gain right to vote in local elections

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a law ratifying the protocol amending the treaty on equal rights for citizens of Belarus and Russia. The document was published on the Russian legal information web portal, BelTA learned.

The protocol stipulates that citizens of Belarus who permanently reside in Russia will have the right to vote and be elected to Russian local authorities. A similar opportunity is provided to Russian citizens permanently residing in Belarus.

The protocol was signed in Moscow on 13 March 2025. On 15 June it was ratified by the State Duma of Russia, and on 16 July by the Federation Council.
The protocol shall enter into force on the date of receipt, through diplomatic channels, of the final written notification confirming completion of all requisite domestic procedures.
