Russia to create open-access database of World War II archives

A database of archive documents on the history of the Second World War accessible to the whole world will be created in Russia, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced in his annual State of the Nation Address to the Federal Assembly on 15 January.

"Russia will set up the largest and most complete database of archive documents, film footage and photo materials on the Second World War that will be accessible both to citizens of our country and people from other states," Vladimir Putin said.
He noted that such work is the duty of Russia as a victorious power and the responsibility to future generations. “We are obliged to protect the truth about the Victory,” Vladimir Putin emphasized. “Otherwise, what do we tell our children if the lies keep spreading around the world like an infection? We must use facts to counteract bald-faced lies and attempts to rewrite the history.”
