Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko is inspecting Svetlogorsk Pulp and Board Mill and its bleached sulfate pulp plant on 14 February.

Upon the arrival, the head of state asked about the details of the scheme to supply raw materials to the enterprise. The President was informed that the company needs more raw materials and additional railway transport to deliver them. Aleksandr Lukashenko gave instructions in this regard. “The issues related to pulpwood delivery should be resolved this year,” he said.

The head of state noted that additional timber supplies to Svetlogorsk Pulp and Board Mill will enable more efficient use of the country’s forest resources, including low-grade wood.

The President was informed that the company has the technology to turn low-grade wood into in-demand products having a high added value. In addition to that, this production is self-sufficient in terms of energy.

“This is our asset [forest resources]. We need to turn them into paper and pulp. This way forest resources will not be sold abroad for a song. This is the main objective behind building this plant,” the Belarusian head of state said.

Bleached sulfate pulp is in high demand on the international market and is an important part of the country’s import-substituting effort. Bleached sulfate pulp is used to make wallpaper, packaging materials, writing paper, cardboard and other products. “There are no companies like that in the entire post-Soviet space. As of today, Svetlogorsk Pulp and Board Mill is the CIS only new pulp plant.
