Belarusian Deputy Prime Minister Leonid Zayats provided the data on the amount of milk, meat, fruit and vegetables Belarusians consume per year as he spoke at a joint sitting of the two chambers of the Belarusian parliament on 21 December, BelTA has learned.

“On average, the annual per capita consumption makes up 98kg of meat, 237kg of milk, 95kg of fruit, 170kg of vegetables, 159kg of potatoes, about 40kg of sugar, 18kg of vegetable oil and 77kg of bread products. In daily per capita terms, consumption is 3,200 kcal, which completely rules out any possible starvation or malnutrition,” said Leonid Zayats.

Belarus ranked 36th in the Global Food Security Index 2021 of 113 countries. “International experts distinguish our country by the high-quality and balanced diet of the population, as well as the stability of consumer prices of products compared to the world's ones. The country has a high level of self-sufficiency in basic consumer products: potatoes, vegetables and melons - 100%, meat - 134%, milk - 263%, eggs - 128%, sugar - 154%, vegetable oil - more than 200%,” the deputy prime minister said.
