The global warming which is today observed by humanity is the most severe for the last 200 000 years. This was stated by the Secretary General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Petteri Taalas in the interview TASS.

According to him, the events of the last 100 years are unique. Taalas explained: «We have become to use the the planet's fossil resources - oil and gas, which led to an increase in carbon dioxide releases into the atmosphere, and these are greenhouse gases that increase the temperature of the lower atmosphere. There has not been such a strong warming for 200 thousand years. And there is very accurate scientific evidence that this would be impossible without intensive burning of coal, oil and gas.»

Meanwhile, he called not to confuse the weather fluctuations and climatic changes. The Secretary General of the WMO clarified also drawing attention to natural fluctuations as a natural phenomenon of El Nino: "Weather fluctuations occur from year to year, from day to day, every week. We see weather anomalies: in some region sometimes there is a very cold season compared to the previous year, or sometimes much warmer than last year. But we must look at global and regional statistical data."

He drew an analogy with the use of doping in sports. "These fluctuations affect the water temperature in the ocean, as well as the average global temperatures. When I see these splashes, I have a comparison with the situation in the world of sports. Take, for example, skiers who show remarkable results, and when they use doping, they will show even better results. As if we doped our atmosphere, and it rushed faster. Therefore, we are observing extreme temperatures, severe floods, droughts, tropical hurricanes," continued Taalas.

He stressed that any weather fluctuations should not be explained by climatic changes. The Secretary General of the organization concluded: "Cold winter does not mean that climate change, warming has stopped, just as warm winters do not mean that this is due to climate change. We still have the usual weather fluctuations simultaneously with the ongoing climate change».
