Ministry of Health: The Omicron strain has become the dominant strain in Minsk

12:31, 24 January

The Omicron occupies more than 50% of all the strains of COVID-19 in Minsk, First Deputy Minister of Health Elena Krotkova said during an interview with ONT.

According to the specialist, the proportion of the new strain is slightly lower in regions, but it holds the leading position in Minsk.

"There is Omicron in Belarus, and we cannot say it is the only one - Delta and influenza are also circulating," First Deputy Minister of Health said.

Elena Krotkova noted that despite the fact that the new strain is less pathogenic, it is more contagious, i.e. the Omicron variant of the coronavirus is spreading faster than the Delta variant.

"In addition, there is information that the Omicron has changed the way how it attaches to and infects human cells. And that's why the Omicron spreads from cell to cell very quickly. It is also its peculiarity," the specialist reported.
