The scientists of the Krasnoyarsk Scientific Center SB RAS and Siberian Federal University have developed high-strength concrete consisting of 90% of industrial and household glass waste, TASS reports. The new material is cheaper and stronger than analogues, in addition, it will reduce the amount of glass waste that harm the environment as the official publication of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences "Science in Siberia" reports. The results of the study are published in the magazine Buildings.

"We have developed a high-strength building material based on industrial and household glass waste. The use of waste in the production of materials will reduce both the anthropogenic load on the environment and the cost of finished products. ", - the employee of the center Sergey Dobrosyslov reports.
It is clarified that the researchers managed to avoid a decrease in the strength of the material. Experiments to optimize the production process have shown that an increase in the concentration of finely ground glass and calcium oxide increases the strength of the glass-concrete composition by 2.5 times.
Increasing the fineness of glass grinding to one micrometer also allowed scientists to abandon autoclave hardening in the production of glass concrete. Autoclave hardening significantly increases the cost and energy intensity of the process, its exclusion allows you to significantly save energy resources.
