Thwaites Glacier, popularly known as the Doomsday Glacier. According to climatologists, the fate of our entire planet depends on it. If the glacier melts, the level of the world's oceans could rise by 25%, which, in turn, would lead to flooding of hundreds of cities around the world.
A large iceberg has blocked two ships with dozens of scientists on board. The research mission is trying to find out how fast an important ice shelf is falling apart.
As geophysicist Rob Larter noted, the iceberg that blocked ships with scientists was the leading edge of the Thwaites until it broke off about 20 years ago.
It was previously reported that in 2019, a void was discovered beneath the Thwaites Glacier in West Antarctica, the volume of which could be filled with 14 billion tons of ice. It was also noted that the melting of the Thwaites Glacier caused the sea level to rise by about 4%.
