Researchers have been searching for the ideal place to collect ice samples for 3 years. 34 km from the Italian-French station Concordia, they set up a complex drilling system at the isolated Little Dome C area.
The climate during the transition to the Middle Pleistocene (900,000-1,2 million years ago) is of great interest to scientists. During this period, the intervals between ice ages increased from 41,000 to 100,000 years.
