Academy of Sciences to celebrate 15th anniversary of Belarus’ participation in Antarctica exploration

Festivities timed to the 15th anniversary since Belarus started exploring Antarctica will take place in the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus on 18 August, the academy’s press service told BelTA.

A delegation of the Russian national weather service Rosgidromet and the Russian Antarctic Expedition of the St Petersburg-based Institute of the Arctic and the Antarctic will take part in the festivities. The program includes an international science conference, an exhibition dedicated to 15 years of Belarusian scientific and expeditionary studies in Antarctica, and an expanded-participation session of the interagency commission on Antarctic affairs.
Participants of Belarusian Antarctic expeditions of different years, employees of organizations, branches of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus that specialize in biological sciences, physics, math, chemistry, Earth science and participate in Antarctic exploration, representatives of Belarusian ministries and government agencies, members of the Belarusian interagency commission on Antarctic affairs and young scientists will convene in the Academy of Sciences.
The exhibition will feature unique historical photos highlighting the participation of Belarusian polar explorers in Soviet and Belarusian Antarctic expeditions, photos and a model of the Belarusian Antarctic station Gora Vechernyaya.
Exhibits and illustrations concerning various branches of scientific studies that Belarusian scientists perform in Antarctica will be on display. Those will include a collection of flora and fauna specimens, minerals and rocks, scientific equipment and instruments, which are used during the studies. Visitors will be able to get consultations about various avenues of scientific studies in Antarctica. A slide show will be organized to demonstrate the best photos about the region.
The conference will review the history of establishment and development of scientific studies in Antarctica, the main results and promising avenues of scientific studies in this region as well as results and prospects of work of Belarusian Antarctic expeditions. A documentary about the last, 13th Belarusian Antarctic expedition will be screened.
The same day top officials of the Rosgidromet and the Institute of the Arctic and the Antarctic will meet with Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus Vladimir Gusakov. An expanded-participation session of the interagency commission on Antarctic affairs will take place. Participants of the bilateral working group will discuss plans to implement the Belarusian-Russian intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in Antarctica in 2021-2022 and the logistics of delivering freight and members of the Belarusian Antarctic expedition.
