A landmark project to preserve historical memory, uniting Belarus and Russia, is planned to be implemented on the M-1 Brest - Minsk - Russian border highway in the year of the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory. On the eve of May 9, billboards informing about the natives of Belarus, honoured with the title of Hero of the Soviet Union, will appear along this road linking the fraternal countries, reports SB.Belarus today.

According to Vadzim Lakiza, director of the Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, the initiative was put forward during the work of the expert advisory Belarusian-Russian council on history and was supported by the aide to Russian President Vladimir Medinski. The general concept of the project was approved, and it is planned to place billboards with information about 30 natives of Belarus who lived in settlements along the M-1 highway.
Specialists are now determining the locations for installation of the structures. It is expected that they will appear near bus stops or petrol stations, and the size of the boards will be 3.6 x 1.6 m, which will ensure their good visibility for drivers and passengers. In addition, it is proposed to add QR codes for more detailed information about the Heroes.
The support of the Russian Military Historical Society will have a significant impact: the organisation has experience in visualising military history. In 2022, bright yellow information signs telling about the heroes and events of the Great Patriotic War were installed in Kursk Region as part of the "Beacons of Memory" project. This idea was first introduced in 2016, when Russian regions competed for the right to install billboards by providing archive data on heroic personalities and memorable events.
This project is the first one of its kind for Belarus, but it has all the chances for further development. It should be noted that almost 448 Belarusians and natives of the country were awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. Billboards along the M-1 will be installed in stages: the first ones will appear by Victory Day, the rest - later.
