Here, in laboratory conditions and during clinical trials, work is being carried out at the intersection of sciences such as biophysics, genetics, medicine, and others, focusing on several promising areas. Specialists research and apply biomedical cellular products (stem cells, killer cells, etc.); the nature of allergic and viral diseases is studied, and vaccine prototypes are being developed. Simply put, the most complex cases in allergology, rheumatology, oncology, and diabetes are being addressed here. The institute not only develops treatment algorithms, but also successfully applies them in practice.
It should be noted that scientists' research in the Republic of Belarus is supported by a solid legislative framework – the concept of "biomedical cellular product" is officially registered here. This significantly simplifies the procedure for introducing innovations into medical protocols.
As reported by Andrey Goncharov, Director of the Institute of Biophysics and Cell Engineering of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, seven biomedical cellular products have been registered in Belarus, and nine more are currently in the process of state registration.
Among those already in use are equivalents of human tissue skin, stem cells, dendritic cells, and human dermal fibroblasts. Regulatory T-lymphocytes, allogeneic natural killer cells, and cytokine-induced killer cells will soon be registered. In complex oncology cases, T-lymphocyte therapy not only helps save patients' lives but also extends remission periods. Allogeneic killer cells have proven effective in fighting leukemia.
In cooperation with organizations of the Ministry of Health, the Institute has developed numerous guidelines for a wide range of diseases, where cell therapy is used not only in inpatient settings but also on an outpatient basis. Among the patients receiving such high-tech medical care are not only citizens of Belarus, but also our closest neighbors from the Russian Federation. Belarusian scientists are also ready to share their experience with the brotherly country, as well as to work together on new scientific developments.
Summarizing his visit to the Institute of Biophysics and Cellular Engineering of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, the State Secretary of the Union State confirmed that there are several areas of joint science worthy of being developed into Union State programs. First and foremost, as a person with a solid economic background, Sergey Glazyev noted that the next step lies with the oversight bodies, which must ensure that these programs will deliver appropriate economic returns.
"New directions in scientists' activities generate a huge economic effect, which, of course, cannot be reduced to the evaluation of individual structures," he noted. "Besides the fact that these directions have social significance, today there is a huge market for medical services that needs to be developed," emphasized the State Secretary of the Union State.
