According to the preliminary data, the legendary citadel was visited by about 470,000 tourists last year. More than 9,200 tourist groups were welcomed in the fortress. The majority were guests from different regions of Belarus, and a lot of Russians.
“I think I will not be mistaken if t say that we had welcomed tourists from almost every continent. There were tourists from at least 50 states, including the United States, Germany, Poland, Ukraine, Latvia, Lithuania, and Italy. A group of 20 tourists from New Zealand came to see the fortress on 30 December,” Grigory Bysyuk said.
“I believe that people from different countries take an interest in the topic of the defense of Brest Fortress, the Great Patriotic War and World War Two. There are ongoing conflicts on the planet today, and people are afraid of such things happening again,” the director said.
According to Grigory Bysyuk, the Brest Hero Fortress received the Ziva Award 2019 instituted by the international fund Forum of Slavic Cultures in the Best Slavic Heritage Site nomination.
The Brest Hero Fortress memorial complex was founded on 25 September 1971. The Museum of Defense opened its doors on 8 November 1956. Over the time the legendary citadel has been visited by more than 25 million tourists.
