Results of an opinion poll suggest that Belarusians consider it essential to further strengthen economic cooperation within the framework of the Belarus-Russia Union State, Deputy Director for Scientific Work at the Institute of Sociology of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus Aleksandr Postalovsky told BelTA.

According to him, in December 2024 the Institute of Sociology conducted an opinion poll (900 respondents) to examine the foreign policy priorities of Belarusians.

"It was interesting to see what people think about international relations and which states, in their opinion, Belarus needs to develop its relations with,” Aleksandr Postalovsky noted. "Respondents were asked: 'Which areas of foreign policy do you believe are priorities?' An overwhelming majority of respondents said that fostering relations with Russia within the Union State is the main priority of our country’s policy."

Belarusians are confident about the need to further economic cooperation within the Union State. "We also asked: 'With which countries should Belarus develop economic cooperation and foreign trade relations?' Once again, the Russian Federation  tops the list. A total of 47% of respondents stressed that economic cooperation with Russia should be strengthened to develop established ties. The second place is taken by the People's Republic of China, with about 34%," the sociologist added. "Certainly, Belarus needs to build friendships and develop relations with many countries, but its key priorities are Russia and China."

"It is encouraging that Russia is considered our main economic partner. Undoubtedly, there are so many factors behind this, including common historical past and memory. We share common values, culture and mindset. The results we have obtained allow us to confidently look into the future concerning the development of relations between our countries and, more broadly, the progress of the Union State," Aleksandr Postalovsky concluded.
