Belarus mulls over post of commissioner for human rights

Belarus is planning to set up a new human rights protection mechanism – the post of a commissioner for human rights, Chairman of the Constitutional Commission and the Constitutional Court Piotr Miklashevich said on 21 July, BelTA has learned.

“Plans are in place to add to the section ‘Prosecutor's Office. Committee of State Control' a chapter about the commissioner for human rights that will formalize the commissioner's' constitutional status, the appointment procedure, and main powers. This will create a new human rights protection mechanism that will contribute to protection of human rights and liberties for effective interaction between citizens and the government in human rights,” Piotr Miklashevich explained.

The Constitutional Commission convened for its ninth meeting on 21 July. Its members took stock of the commission's work on suggested amendments to the Constitution of Belarus.
