Lukashenko sends condolences over numerous quake victims in Morocco

Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko has extended condolences to King Mohammed VI of Morocco in connection with the numerous human casualties and huge destruction caused by a powerful earthquake, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian leader.

“It is with deep sorrow and pain in the hearts that the people of Belarus have learned the sad news about the terrible earthquake in your country, which caused numerous human casualties and large-scale destruction,” the letter of condolences runs.

The Belarusian head of state expressed his sincere condolences and words of support to the King of Morocco, the families of the victims, and wished a speedy recovery to all the injured.

The quake measuring magnitude 6.9 struck central Morocco just after 23:00 local time on 9 September. The death toll from the quake has already gone over 1,000. There are many injured. The epicenter was 77km of Marrakesh at a depth of 10km. The aftershocks caused damage to residential buildings and various structures. There are problems with mobile communications and electricity in the areas affected by the earthquake. Rescue services are removing the rubble. In Marrakech, a street hospital has been set up to provide assistance to the injured. Specialists are urging people to donate blood.
