Makei: Some post-Soviet states are acting cautiously fearing repercussions

Fearing repercussions, some post-Soviet countries are acting very cautiously at a time of confrontation between Russia and the West, Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei told the media after the Security Council meeting on 7 April, BelTA has learned.

“A great number of countries will adopt a wait-and-see approach to what is happening now waiting who will prevail in this fight. They will keep doing it until a new world will emerge and a new world order will start taking shape. After all, today we see that many countries (even the former USSR republics, even the closest allies of Russia and Belarus) are very cautious and shy away from voting on sensitive issues saying that they want to abstain. However, earlier they supported both Belarus and Russia,” Vladimir Makei noted.
The minister said that the logic of these countries is understandable, but this will be taken into account when building foreign policy. “They are casting their lot with the more powerful West and are afraid of some negative consequences. This is also understandable humanwise. But we believe that principles based on international law should prevail. These principles used to guide and shape interstate relations,” the diplomat stressed.
