Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Maksim Ryzhenkov praised the level of ministerial cooperation as he spoke at a bilateral meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov in Brest on 22 November, BelTA has learned.

Brest hosted a joint meeting of the boards of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Belarus and Russia on 22 November. Ahead of the meeting the foreign ministers visited the Brest Fortress and met with students of Brest universities. According to Maksim Ryzhenkov, such format shows the joint position of Belarus and Russia on preserving historical memory and countering attempts to rewrite history.

“The interaction between our foreign ministries is at the highest level. A whole set of events takes place during the year. I always feel the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and your personal support. This helps us promptly resolve any issues. Even when we are far away from each other, we always keep in touch,” the minister of foreign affairs said.

Maksim Ryzhenkov thanked all employees of the Russian Foreign Ministry who work abroad. “This is a really great help in the implementation of the foreign policy, foreign economic tasks we are engaged in. In general, we have nothing to share abroad. We complement each other and help each other. This probably means the strategic partnership and brotherhood between our countries,” he said.

Sergey Lavrov, in turn, noted that the tasks set by the presidents for the foreign ministries envisage the closest cooperation at all levels, including between the heads of regions.

“We know what attention Aleksandr Grigoriyevich Lukashenko pays to regular meetings with the heads of the regions of the Russian Federation. Together with Vladimir Putin, they hold special forums. This has already become a good tradition. And, of course, Brest is a symbol, especially in the year of the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Belarus and on the eve of the 80th anniversary of our common Great Victory. It is great that there was also a meeting with the youth organized. They showed deep interest in foreign policy. They demonstrated their commitment to their educational processes, construction teams. This gives another guarantee that the younger generation will be a worthy successor to the cause our presidents promote and to which we are trying to contribute in every possible way,” the Russian foreign minister said.

Among the topics discussed at the joint board were plans for the development of the Union State, which is about to turn 25 years old. “I am convinced that there will be new agreements for the next period, which will be even more ambitious, and in the interests of our countries, our peoples,” Sergey Lavrov added.
