The Minsk International Book Fair should expand and attract even more countries and publishers, State Secretary of the Union State Grigory Rapota told the media on 18 February.

“I wish the exhibition to expand in the future, to develop, to attract as many states and publishers as possible, and to be always a subject of special attention of the cultural community of Russia and Belarus,” Grigory Rapota said.

When asked about whether the exhibition changes from year to year Grigory Rapota said: “In my opinion some kind of basis should be preserved all the time. It does not mean however there should not be variations. There should be basis also because visitors and participants get used to a certain format. When it changes drastically it creates chaotic movement which may reduce interest to the exhibition,” he stressed. According to him, changes need to be related to the expansion of the exhibition.

“We are always honored to participate in such a wonderful forum. Every year we also report on publishing activities within the Union State framework. We focus our attention on those areas of history, modern life, culture, science and technology that bind our two countries and reflect them in our publications. You can get familiar with our literature at the stand and see what we do,” Grigory Rapota said.

The 28th edition of the Minsk International Book Fair kicked off at the exhibition center at 14 Pobeditelei Avenue on 18 February. The trade show has brought together 281 exhibitors from 20 countries, including Russia, Kazakhstan, Iran, Venezuela, Palestine, Austria, Pakistan, Turkey, and Germany. This year the fair will work one hour longer: from 10.00 to 20.00 on 18-20 February and from 10.00 to 17.00 on 21 February.

In view with the current epidemiological situation, visitors will be asked to wear masks and observe social distancing.

Theaters, cinemas, and TV channels will be showing films and plays based on the works of famous writers of Belarus and other countries during the fair. A traditional “poetry bus” will be running from the Nemiga metro station to the exhibition center at 14 Pobeditelei Avenue. Everyone will be invited to take a free-of-charge ride and listen to the works of famous writers. The entry to the fair will also be free. The fair is expected to draw some 50,000 visitors.
