Since the accident, both international organizations and entire states have continually taken comprehensive measures to eliminate the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster. A significant role in solving this issue is played, among others, by Union State programmes, said Head of the Chernobyl Catastrophe Remediation Department of the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry Sergei Shparlo, reports the Union State portal correspondent.

The fifth Union State programme aimed to overcome the consequences of the Chernobyl accident was launched in 2019. This time, special attention is being paid to social protection and medical care, as well as to a set of protective measures introduced in the settlements where the radiation dose may exceed permissible levels. Moreover, priority tasks are to support radiation-monitoring system and return to use the land taken out of circulation bearing in mind economic requirements and radiation safety.

“At the moment, we are developing a fire-fighting complex preventing the ignition of forest and peatlands in contaminated areas. The work is now in progress. A factory in Russian Nizhny Novgorod has already manufactured frames. They will be delivered in the nearest future,” said Sergei Shparlo.

In addition, soon we are going to start applying this year’s funds. After that, the work on creating fire-prevention lanes will be resumed as well. The contractor that is to perform this work has already been chosen.

We would remind you that since 1998, four programmes aimed to overcome the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster have already been implemented within the framework of the Union State.

As part of these programmes, the Union State has created a common regulatory space and joint systems of specialized medical care provided to the citizens of the two countries affected by the Chernobyl disaster and its consequences, as well as the material and technical basis of a unified medical care system.

The National Scientific and Practical Center for Radiation Medicine and Human Ecology has been built and fitted with new equipment in Gomel; Grodno Plant of Medical Preparations has come into operation; both Medical Radiological Research Center of the Russian Health Ministry in Obninsk and the All-Russian Center for Emergency and Radiation Medicine of the Russian Ministry of Emergencies in St. Petersburg have undergone reconstruction.
