Belarus and Russia will strengthen coordination on cooperation with the Global South countries, including Africa, Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergei Aleinik told the media on 29 January, BelTA has learned.

“We have been building up our interaction with Russia across all the issues of foreign policy for the past few years. In December, we held a joint meeting of the boards of our foreign ministries. The key issues that we discussed then were precisely related to coordination and our interaction in Africa, Asia and Latin America, otherwise called today as the Global South or the global majority,” the foreign minister said. “We are already working actively in this direction. We have agreed to strengthen our coordination. Africa is an absolute priority in this regard. It is the continent of the future, a dynamically developing region with huge economic, demographic and technological potential. We will certainly step up our work there.”

As BelTA reported earlier, at the Supreme State Council meeting in St. Petersburg, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said that in recent days they carried out a serious joint work with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, discussing a whole range of issues. The focus was on economic cooperation, including with the countries of Asia and Africa: “We also discussed the work on the Asian continent, especially in Africa, where we are welcome. They are really waiting for us there. First of all, they are waiting for Russia with its huge opportunities,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
