Sabalenka progresses to Madrid Open semifinal

Belarus’ world number one Aryna Sabalenka reached the Madrid Open semifinal seeing off World No.36 Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (9-7), BelTA has learned.

The match that required two incredibly tense tiebreaks lasted for two hours and 32 minutes. 

The Belarusian will face Ukraine’s World No.17 Elina Svitolina. On her way to the semifinal Aryna Sabalenka defeated Russia’s world number 76 Anna Blinkova, 6-3, 6-4, Belgium’s world number 28 Elise Mertens, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1, and World No.44 Peyton Stearns of the United States, 6-2, 6-4.   

Aryna Sabalenka won the event in 2021 and 2023. Last year she lost to Poland’s Iga Swiatek in the final. The second semifinal of the current edition will feature Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff of the United States.  

In the doubles semifinal Belarus’ Victoria Azarenka and Ashlyn Krueger of the United States will play Elise Mertens of Belgium and Russia’s Veronika Kudermetova.

The 2025 Madrid Open will be over on 4 May. The winner will earn €985,000 and 1,000 points.
