Hanna Sola, Dzinara Smolskaya win silver in team sprint at Commonwealth Cup in Sochi

The Belarusian biathletes Hanna Sola and Dzinara Smolskaya won medals at the fifth stage of the Commonwealth Biathlon Cup, which ended in Sochi, Russia, BelTA has learned.

The Belarusian girls took the podium after a team sprint event. After the first quarter of the race Hanna Sola and Dzinara Smolskaya were in the top ten, but by the halfway point they had moved into the top three, trailing the leaders by 20 seconds. In the second half of the race the Belarusians caught up and took the lead after the final shooting, but in the last lap they lost to Russians Kristina Reztsova and Natalia Shevchenko.

Hanna Sola and Dzinara Smolskaya won silver medals, finishing 24 seconds ahead of the bronze medalists Tamara Derbusheva and Victoria Slivko. A total of three Belarusian pairs and 12 Russian duos took part in the race. Belarus’ Kseniya Varabei and Irina Shakleina rounded out the top five while Hanna Makarskaya and Alena Kulak finished 12th. In the men’s team sprint event Belarusians Ivan Tulatsin and Mikita Labastau finished eighth.

After five stages of the Commonwealth Cup Russia’s Eduard Latypov leads the overall men’s standings, with Belarus’ Anton Smolski trailing him by 18 points. Kristina Reztsova leads the women’s overall standings, with her compatriot Natalia Shevchenko just one point behind. Dzinara Smolskaya and Hanna Sola are in the fourth and fifth places. The final stage of the tournament will take place in Murmansk, Russia from 3 to 5 April.
