Belarus will name its roster for the European Weightlifting Championships that are due to take place in Moscow in autumn 2020 after the Belarusian Weightlifting Championships, chief coach of the Belarusian men's national weightlifting team Mikhail Solodar told BelTA.

“The training process is in full swing. Not long ago we held competitions in Staiki. The whole national team took part in them. We expect to participate in international competitions in autumn, including the European Weightlifting Championships. We need to prepare for them. We have everything necessary at our training camp. We plan to host the Belarusian championship in Staiki in September. The best athletes will take part in the European Weightlifting Championships,” Mikhail Solodar said.

According to the chief coach, many athletes have improved performance, and the leaders are determined to fight for the right to get to the Olympic Games in Tokyo. In his words, there are five people who may qualify for the Games.

As head coach of the Belarusian men's national weightlifting team Viktor Shershukov told BelTA earlier, the team has switched to weight routine, all the recovery measures are on schedule. Two athletes (one female and one male) have all the chances to qualify for the Olympic Games.

The European Weightlifting Championships in Moscow, which have been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, lost its 2020 Olympic Games qualification status following the decision of the IWF Executive Committee.

The European Weightlifting Championships in Moscow were initially to take place on 4-12 April. It was then decided to hold the event on 13-21 June. Later the European Weightlifting Federation (EWF) took a decision to postpone it to 31 October-8 November. The tournament can be rescheduled to 2021.
