Belarus' world number 27 Victoria Azarenka went off to a good start in the 2020 US Open dismissing Austria's number 139 Barbara Haas 6-1, 6-2 in the opener, BelTA has learned.

In round two Victoria Azarenka will play Belarus' world number 11 Aryna Sabalenka, who opened her US Open campaign with a 7-6 (7-1), 6-4 victory over France's Oceane Dodin, ranked world No. 115.
Earlier, Belarus' world number 351 Vera Lapko saw off world number 123 Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland 1-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 and Belarus' world number 106 Aliaksandra Sasnovich defeated world number 129 Francesca Di Lorenzo of the United States 2-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-0 to reach the second round. Vera Lapko will next play Kazakhstan's world number 35 Yulia Putintseva. Aliaksandra Sasnovich will next take on world number 15 Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic.
World number 130 Olga Govortsova cruised past world number 194 Asia Muhammad of the United States 6-1, 6-2 to earn a second-round match against U.S. Sloane Stephens, ranked world No.39.
In the men's event, Belarus' world number 72 Egor Gerasimov dismissed Serbia's world number 24 Dusan Lajovic in the opening round, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. The Belarusian will next play Australia's world number 63 Jordan Thompson.
The US Open in New York, with the total prize pool of $53.4 million, will complete on 13 September.
