Azarenka past Cirstea into Montreal round of 16

Belarus' world number 15 Victoria Azarenka progressed to the round of Last 16 at the Omnium Banque Nationale, seeing off Romania's world number 40 Sorana Cirstea in two straight sets 6-2, 6-2 in an hour and 15 minutes, BelTA has learned.

The two players faced each other at the Wimbledon tournament in early July with the Romanian celebrating a win, 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 6-4.

Belarus' world number 3 Aryna Sabalenka will kick off her Montreal run from the second round against world number 62 Sloane Stephens of the United States. Aryna Sabalenka and Elise Mertens of Belgium will start the doubles event from the round of Last 16.

The competitions in Montreal will complete on 15 August.
