Deputy Chief Engineer for Personnel Training - Head of the Training Center of the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant (BelNPP) Aleksandr Yerin talked about the recruitment and training of personnel for the BelNPP as he spoke at a roundtable hosted by BelTA.

According to the specialist, a major in nuclear energy was introduced at Belarusian universities in 2008. This major was available at Belarusian State University, Belarusian National Technical University, Belarusian State University of Informatics and Radioelectroncis and International Sakharov Environmental Institute. The first specialists in nuclear energy graduated in 2013-2014. “Today the nuclear power plant is fully staffed, and the approaches to recruiting people have changed a little. We offer internships to university graduates. We select the most motivated of them and offer them jobs. The personnel training program for nuclear energy will be running until 2025. It has been extended several times, which allowed us to get the necessary specialists for the Belarusian nuclear power plant,” he emphasized.

He added that the personnel training system is based on IAEA requirements. “The first 600 specialists for key positions were trained while staffing the power plant. They were hired to operate the first power unit. It was envisaged by the general contract for the construction of the Belarusian nuclear power plant. As part of this contract, we commissioned an educational and training center,” Aleksandr Yerin informed.

The educational and training center has been operating since 2016. It is located within walking distance from the BelNPP site. “The educational and training center is fully staffed with instructors and specialists. Every year it runs various training programs. It helps more than 1,000 people hone up their skills. Among them are specialists involved in the operation and repair of equipment for BelNPP,” the expert said.
